Evaluating the feasibility of distributed access transparency

Access transparency means that both local and remote resources are accessed using identical operations. Transparency simplifies the complexity of programming a distributed system be- cause the system is perceived as a whole rather than a collection of independent components. With access transparency, we can treat disaggregated compute, storage, and memory resources as if they were a single monolithic machine. This would considerably simplify the creation and execution of parallel applications in the Cloud in a scalable manner. Recent reductions in network latency are boosting resource disaggregation in the Cloud, which is the de•nitive catalyst to achieve transparency. Recent works at the Operating System level (LegoOS) and at the application level (Lithops, Crucial) provide recent examples of transparency in a distributed setting: they show how unmodified applications can be run transparently over distributed resources. Nevertheless, as stated in the vision paper "Serverless End Game: Disaggregation enabling Transparency" there are still important challenges to achieve transparency for stateful applications. In particular, requirements for locality, shared memory access, or elasticity must be addressed. The goal is to design a Cloud Computing middleware that intercepts existing applications and move them efficiently in an optimized way to a distributed setting. The project mut ensure scalability, elasticity, and fault tolerance for legacy applications. We will also explore how to demonstrate the concept of transparency over Cloud event based architectures, and integrating Cloud and Edge scenarios.
